Dhanbad, Jan. 14: The recent decision of Vinoba Bhave University (VBU) to centralise the engineering examination process has not gone down well with the students and administration of BIT, Sindri.

Students and teachers of BIT, the oldest state-run engineering college, fear the decision would lead to delays in holding examinations and in the process affect the job prospects of students.

Any slackness on the part of other state-run engineering colleges would delay examinations of all other colleges as the university wants exams to be conducted simultaneously.

The university, however, promised that examinations would be held on schedule. It said the move to centralise the examination process was aimed at ensuring greater transparency and systematisation in the examination process.

“We have decided to publish the results within a month of conducting the examinations,” said VBU vice-chancellor Arvind Kumar. He added that this decision had been taken during the examination board meeting of the university recently as it would help students get better placements.

Allaying fears of examination delays due to the inability of some colleges to complete the syllabus on time under the new system, Kumar said the University College of Engineering Technology (UCET) and private engineering college RGIT had been instructed to conduct extra classes to complete the course on time.

BIT Sindri was the only engineering college affiliated to VBU till a few years ago and was responsible for holding examinations and publishing results on behalf of the university.

“We have no problem with the university decision to centralise the examination process provided it ensures that there is no delay in the session or examination. The resultant loss of job opportunities would badly hit students already reeling under the effects of recession,” said the director of BIT Sindri Dr S.K. Singh, adding that the new system in fact would lessen the additional burden on the institute.

“The university does not have enough experience or expertise in the form of competent teachers to conduct engineering examinations on its own and its decision may mess up the entire process,” said a final year student, requesting anonymity.
