Jamshedpur: Tatanagar station on Friday opened two counters for reserved tickets at the second entry at Burmamines-end.

The counters, which are part of a computerised passenger reservation system, will remain open from 8am to 2pm daily and sell Tatkal tickets too.

"The new counters will help to reduce the rush for reserved tickets at the existing counters. This initiative was taken for the convenience of passengers," Bhaskar, senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division, said.

On Thursday evening, Tatanagar's commercial and telecom departments had sent their reports to Chakradharpur on the installation of the necessary infrastructure to begin the facility.

Based on the reports, the divisional railway manager of Chakradharpur, Chatrashal Singh, asked officials to make the counters operational from Friday.

Tatanagar railway officials said the existing two-storeyed computerised passenger reservation system on the station premises had five counters for reserved tickets. "Most of the time, the counters witness huge rush of passengers," an official said.

He added that one of the counters would be closed after the opening of new counters at the station.

The stations second entry at Burmamines-end, which started functioning last year, had only two counters for unreserved tickets.

People residing in Burmamines, Golmuri, Baridih and other areas in the eastern parts of the city had to cross the railway overbridge to reach the station to get reserved tickets.

The Chhotanagpur Passenger Association lauded the move.

"It will be immensely beneficial for passengers and help to ease the rush at the reserved counters on the station premises," Arun Tiwari, general secretary of the association, said.

Railway officials said they would develop other amenities such as sitting arrangements and wash rooms at the Burmamines-end.
