Ranchi, Feb. 6: He was the only one from Bihar and Jharkhand to get selected for MD (Ophthalmology) course at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi in 2012 and now he has topped the admission test for its coveted senior residency programme, which has only three general seats.

But, city youth Dr Bibhuti Prasad Kashyap does not want a flying career in the national capital, rather he wants to return to his motherland and serve the poor and downtrodden here on completion of his residency tenure at the AIIMS.

"My parents are also ophthalmologists and have been serving the poor and socially abandoned people of the state. I would like to take over the baton from them and bring the advanced medical techniques to Jharkhand," said Bibhuti, who was in Ranchi waiting for his admissions.

Son of city-based ophthalmologists Birendra Prasad and Bharti Kashyap, Bibhuti completed his MD in ophthalmology last year. "At AIIMS, I performed over 5,000 eye surgeries, which is a big thing for us. In the US and other developed countries, one does not get an opportunity to perform even 500 operations. I have no plans to go abroad after completing my senior residency course. I want to serve poor at home," he elaborated about his plans.

Exited about the new programme, Bibhuti said apart from retina surgery, his new assignment would involve unexplored areas like uvea, retinopathy in pre-matured new born babies and paediatric ophthalmology. "I hope my expertise will be of some use to the poor people in Jharkhand, who have to wait in long queues to consult a specialist doctor," he added.

An alumni of Delhi Public School in Ranchi (2006 batch), Bibhuti was always a topper. He had secured honours in eight MBBS streams at Kasturba Medical College in Manipal, where he also bagged the academic excellence award.

Bibhuti has inherited the legacy from his forefathers. Both his paternal and maternal grandfathers headed the ophthalmology departments at medical colleges in Ranchi and Darbhanga respectively. His parents run Kashyap Memorial Eye Hospital in Ranchi.
