A 21-year-old promising cricketer, due for a training stint at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, drowned at Dhurwa Dam on Thursday morning while he had gone there for bath after a practice session at Mecon Stadium.

The body of Gaurav Kumar Singh, who was a member of the Mecon cricket team, was fished around 10.30am, about an hour after he had taken a dip at the dam, his friends said.

Officer-in-charge of Nagri police station Ajay Kumar Singh said a case had not been registered in connection with the death on the request of Gaurav's parents, who said they did not suspect foul play.

"Gaurav's father did not want a post-mortem conducted on his son's body. Hence, he requested us not to register a case," Ajay Kumar explained.

Gaurav, a resident of Railway Colony in Chutia, about 4km from Mecon Colony, is survived by his father Sanjay Kumar Singh, an inspector of works with Indian Railways, mother Reena Devi and two sisters.

Those who knew him said he was a talented cricketer, an all-rounder who was a spinner and also excelled with the bat. He was one of nine chosen from Jharkhand by Board of Control for Cricket in India for training at the National Cricket Academy, Banglore.

Gaurav, who was a member of the state's Under-19 squad, had also played in the super division cricket league.
