Ranchi, April 10: The spate of suicides at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra, has prompted students to introspect and look for ways to check such incidents.
At a seminar organised by the BIT Interact Society at the institute?s extension centre in Lalpur today, the students felt that stress management was an important factor and that meditation was an effective tool to check the suicide rate.
The seminar highlighted the need for stress management, the methodology and different tools required to tackle it.
The issue of students being driven to suicides were also discussed.
?I was shocked when I heard about the suicide cases. It was surprising that the students committed suicide because of stress. Students should realise that suicide is not the solution to such situations,? said Manoj Tiwary, an ex-student of the institution.
?We all deal with stress, when we fail to communicate. We fail to realise the Sanskrit belief, Aham Bramha Asmi, which means the Brahma resides in us. This realisation helps us in keeping our cool,? Tiwary said.
The former student also spoke about the importance of meditation and discussed at length the right way to do it.
Lack of motivation, energy and focus is often the cause of stress and one should meditate with the help of a guide to get good results.
?I rely on meditation to relieve myself of stress and have been practising it for the past six months,? he said.
The seminar answered queries put by the students, such as how to build up confidence, how to communicate effectively and how to share feelings.
There have been four suicides at BIT Mesra since September 2005.
