Jamshedpur, Dec. 28: It may not be quite Mumbai’s Kala Ghoda festival, but an innovative exhibition organised by the students and faculty members of Jamshedpur School of Art to promote their work is generating enough excitement and more.
For the first time, the art school has organised a two-day street exhibition — Kala aur Parichay — at Kadma-Sonari link road.
“Street painting is not an unusual concept in metros like Calcutta, New Delhi and Mumbai, but not in this state. Since awareness about art is almost nil in Jamshedpur, this is a new way to let people know about fine arts,” said Public Biswas, faculty of Jamshedpur School of Art.
There are 24 paintings on display, all of them works of 11 students. Ajay Namta, Shama Parveen, Chandan Bhattacharya, Kiran, Dilraj Kaur, Amit Chaurasia, Zeba Bakhtyar, Babita Sharma, Priti, Radhanand Yadav and Nazia are the students who have contributed their works for the exhibition. While some are freshers, others are in the third and fourth years of their diploma course.
The students have breathed life into their works with water colours, mix media, acrylic, dry pastel, pen and ink, poster colour, glass liners, etc. In pride of place among the works are two collages made by Dilraj Kaur.
Most of the paintings are life studies and outdoor scenes, though a few of the students have tried their hand at abstract as well. A number of sceneries depict village life and riverscapes.
The exhibition is open to all, but the organisers are not looking at selling any of the works on display.
“We did not want our creations to be locked in a room. Renowned artists put up their works in exhibitions so that people can see them and we also wanted to do the same thing. The exhibition is a kind of a learning process and also a way to attract attention to our works. It is easy because it is on the street where every passer-by will have a look even if they do not know anything about or are interested in art,” said Zeba Bakhtyar, a student.
