Ranchi, Oct. 1: The university was prompt to bar Rajan (name changed) from contesting the union poll for misspelling the name of the post he was keen to compete, but officials are confused how to take action against returning officers who also did the same mistake.

The weird situation took place after the student — who filed nomination for secretary from a Bundu college — lodged a complaint with the grievance cell against the cancellation done by the returning officers who spelt “Saturdy” and “Bund” for Saturday and Bundu, respectively.

The cell, set up for the poll purpose only, also received a lot of such complaints from students’ organisations.

Grievance cell members said that although it was the discretion of respective returning officers of colleges to go through the nominations and either to consider the same or reject it, but some colleges acted strict while others giving leverages.

However, one of the senior officials said the complaint would look into the matter concerning the Bundu college.

Mistakes like writing “assistant secretary” as name of the post in place of deputy secretary is common too. Even those who did not write assistant, officials from various colleges said that many candidates simply put it “dipty”, in case of deputy.

Although students’ union polls are not fought on political-party basis, Ranchi College officials revealed that they came across a few cases where students put NSUI, Ajsu, JCM among others in nomination papers resulting into cancellation.

Meanwhile, a group of students from Panch Pargana Kisan College in Bundu complained that a student of degree Part-III ensured re-admission in the same college in degree Part-I to enable himself to contest the polls.

“The student has academic arrears in degree Part-II studies. It officially debars him from contesting the polls as per the Lyngdoh committee recommendations,” said a student in the group.

A showcause notice has been issued to the principal of the college regarding this while cancelling the student’s nomination, confirmed one of the grievance cell members

A group of students owing allegiance to NSUI entered the office of the vice-chancellor, A.A. Khan, and alleged that college/university authorities “do not know the exact rules and regulations” pertaining to conducting students’ union polls, as they were reportedly not informed about the process of the university-level polls.

Plea before HC

Three students, who filed nomination papers for the polls, moved the high court challenging cancellation of their nominations.

The candidates, belonging to Chhotanagpur Law College and supported by Ajsu, said that LLB should be considered as postgraduate course, not a professional one.
