Jamshedpur, Nov. 7: Several parts of the state including Chotanagpur and Santhal Pargana are likely to experience light showers and overcast skies over the next 48-hours due to the impact of severe cyclonic storm Jal which is expected to hit the coast off Nellore in Andhra Pradesh tonight.

The Regional Meteorological Centre at Alipore in Calcutta this afternoon predicted light rains and wind speed of 15-20kmh in the next 48 hours.

“The severe cyclonic storm in the West Central Bay has gained strength. It is expected to hit the Nellore coast tonight. Our observations suggests that after it hits the coast the cyclonic storm will take the shape of a deep depression, which will result in adverse weather conditions in Jharkhand,” said G.C. Debnath, director of the Alipore weather centre.

According to him, the adverse weather condition will result in overcast sky at several places including Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Daltonganj and elsewhere. It will also result in a rise in the minimum temperature by 1 to 2 degree Celsius.

However, he ruled out the possibility of heavy rainfall. “The cyclonic storm will become weak after hitting the coast. As its direction of movement is north-westward, it will affect the weather conditions in Jharkhand,” he said.

The Patna Meteorological Office, which keeps a tab on Jharkhand weather conditions, has also predicted a slight rise in night temperatures due to cloud coverage.

“Weather chart analysis and satellite pictures indicate formation of patches of medium and high clouds at several places across the state. The severe cyclonic storm will increase the cloud coverage across Jharkhand,” said a senior weather analyst at the Patna Meteorological Office.

Weathermen said the minimum temperatures in Jamshedpur and its adjoining areas would rise to about 20 degree Celsius against today’s 18 degree Celsius. Similarly night temperatures will show an upward trend at other places including the capital in the next 48-hours.

The Patna Meteorological Office in its long-term forecast issued this evening predicted that the minimum temperature at several places including the capital would witness a plunge from Wednesday.

“The impact of the severe cyclonic storm would wane in the next 48-hours. The sky at most parts of the state would become clear from Wednesday. This will result in a further dip in temperature,” said S.I. Lashkar, officiating director of the Patna Meteorological Office.

Earlier, this month the state was in the grip of western disturbances, which resulted in intermittent rainfall at several places.
