What are the most common dental ailments you come across ?

We should not think in terms of teeth alone but oral health on the whole.

The most common as well as dangerous disease is oral cancer, which is taking the shape of an epidemic in Bihar and Jharkhand. In around 100 cancer cases, 35 are oral cancer. The saddest part is that all these diseases can be prevented. Other common diseases are chronic destructive periodontal disease (gum disease) and dental caries (cavities).

What are the reasons behind the diseases?

Chewing tobacco and smoking lead to oral cancer. Paan masala, gutka and other forms of tobacco are extremely harmful for the mouth and teeth, as they cause harmful lesions. In countries where these habits are less, oral cancer is found only in 2 per cent of the population. As for the gum diseases and cavities, the eating habits nowadays are to be blamed. Soft drinks, chocolates are consumed in large proportions. Another reason is that children are weaned from mother’s milk at a tender age. Babies are fed sugared milk or sugar and water, which leaves germs in their mouths.

What should one do for oral and dental care?

Better hygiene and cleanliness are the primary tips. Brushing your teeth is a must. You should also floss your teeth regularly. I also recommend flouride toothpastes which are universally available nowadays. Finally, one must visit the dentist regularly to get teeth cleaned. You must also keep a watch on eating habits.
