RDCIS building in Ranchi |
Ranchi, Aug. 11: The premier R&D unit of SAIL’s Research and Development Centre for Iron and Steel (RDCIS) today declared that it would develop 18 new steel products for defence, nuclear research, oil, gas, power and auto segments in the current fiscal.
“We want to develop newer varieties of steel for use by strategic segments of our country with complete import substitution. RDCIS’s major efforts are aimed at cost reduction, quality improvement and value addition to SAIL products. For long-term development, initiatives are taken to develop special steel products for strategic industries as well,” RDCIS director in-charge A.S. Mathur said.
According to an action plan, RDCIS was developing a special type of soft iron plates at Bhilai Steel Plant. The plates will be used for nuclear research at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre. It will be used to fabricate a magnetised active detector for experiments on neutrino particles under Neutrino Observatory project.
For the defence sector, special grade steel plates with high tensile strength are being developed at Rourkela Steel Plant. These will be useful for production of small armament vehicles. Another type of high-ductile steel is being developed at Bhilai Steel Plant for defence and pressure vessel applications.
Three new steel products are being developed for propane gas cylinders, construction and auto segments at Bokaro Steel Plant. Special grades of steel are in the making at Durgapur Steel Plant while at IISCO Steel Plant, special quality roll threaded bolts for underground mines and high tension steel for construction applications are being developed.
