A group of 24 steel city students went up, down and across to decimate opponents on the crossword board, as Jamshedpur hosted the city round of the first-ever CBSE Cryptic Crossword Contest 2014 on Friday.

Students of Classes IX to XII from a dozen schools gathered at DBMS Kadma High School to take part in the unique contest that tests their vocabulary and analytical skills.

Patna-based civil society Extra-C, which specialises in hosting such competitions, co-ordinated the event. According to the format, city rounds will be organised in 34 places across the country, including Ranchi, Jamshedpur and Bokaro.

On Friday, the team from Carmel Junior College took home the winner’s trophy while DAV Public School-Bistupur booked the second slot.

While the winning team will go on to participate in the national round to be held in New Delhi in December, DAV Public School-Bistupur will be kept on standby, if the team from Carmel Junior College fails to take part.

If students exhibited their analytical side at the crossword contest, a Hindi elocution competition at the Centre for Excellence tested how articulate their peers are.

Hosted by Society for Promotion of Professional Excellence, 40 Hindi schools participated in the contest.

The topic for juniors was Chidiyagarh ka bhraman (zoo visit) while that for seniors was Samudra tat par niwas (Living by the sea). The top three speakers of both groups received cash prizes of Rs 1,500, Rs 1,200 and Rs 1,000.

“The aim is to spread green awareness among students,” said secretary Jenny Shah.
