Ranchi, Aug. 5: All eyes are now on Raj Bhavan in the wake of sudden departure of Ranchi University pro-vice chancellor Shailendra Kumar Shukla, who decided to quit within a fortnight of assuming the charge, triggering a controversy.

Governor Droupadi Murmu is expected to return to the state capital tomorrow and take a call on the resignation submitted by Shukla.

"The governor had gone to Punjab to participate in a conference. She is likely to arrive here tomorrow. Thereafter, a decision on the Pro-VC's resignation will be taken in a day or two," said governor's principal secretary S.K. Satpathy.

A professor of mechanical engineering at IIT-BHU, Shukla had assumed charge on June 17 and put down his papers on August 2, citing personal reasons.

During his brief stint, he courted controversies for going out of station without vice-chancellor Ramesh Chandra Pandey's sanction and staying away from his office.

"There was no political interference in his selection. He was appointed after several rounds of screening. But, one cannot be forced to do a particular job," Satpathy added.

A professor of anthropology department at RU said: "The Centre has initiated moves to execute the Seventh Pay Commission recommendations and BHU teachers will be among the first few to get the benefits. Here, we got the Sixth Pay scales four years after since it came into force. Our arrears have not been settled completely yet. This might be a reason that prompted Shukla to leave. Further, here the Pro-VC has very limited roles."

In Ranchi varsity, the Pro-VC is responsible for conducting degree-level exams and promoting sport activities.

"He (Shukla) seldom attended office. The academic work wasn't affected. But, the row created confusion among teachers and officials," said Ranchi College principal U.C. Mehta.
