
The Mass was held at Nirmal Hriday, a home for destitutes set up in 1967 on East Jail Road, Ranchi.
All 145 inmates of Nirmal Hriday, the old and the infirm, some mentally ill or unable to walk unaided, came to the chapel where a garlanded photograph of Mother Teresa was placed.
The sisters said they watched the proceedings live from Vatican on TV.
At the Missionaries of Charity headquarters at Ranchi, Sister Eugenius said a thanksgiving Mass would be held next Sunday, September 11, in honour of St Teresa, presided over by Charles Soreng, bishop emeritus.
"For us, Mother has always been a symbol of love," she said.
At St Mary's Cathedral on Purulia Road, president of Ranchi Archdiocese Albinus Tigga said they would wait for Cardinal Telesphore P Toppo to return from the Vatican before hosting a special Mass in honour of St Teresa.
