Power play in tennis tourney - State girls shine in under-14 category

Jamshedpur, Sept. 22: Sushmita Paul, Suchi Smita Pani and Srishti Smriti Burh of Jharkhand romped into the Under-14 girl’s singles quarter-final at the ongoing Tata Steel-SV Impact Talent Series Tennis Championship.

The matches are being played at JRD Tata Sports Complex.

Bihar’s Adya Sinha also joined the threesome in the last eight, posting a 4-1, 4-1 win over Insha Imam of Jharkhand in the pre-quarters tie today.

The Under-16 girls’ singles contests saw Chandigarh’s Bhavya Wadhwan defeating Kishlay Kaushambee (Bihar) 4-0,4-0.

In the first round match of the same age group Bengal’s Chandrima Saha beat Kanika Kriti of Bihar 4-0,4-2.

In the Under-14 category, while Sushmita defeated Bihar’s Kishlay Kaushambee 4-0,4-1, Suchi drubbed Ananya Sharma of Bihar 4-0, 4-0. Srishti cut short statemate Sushmita Vishwakarma by a similar scoreline.

Jamshedpur’s Ratan Soren and Md Shaharayar Salim of Jharkhand romped into the pre-quarterfinals of the ongoing tennis competition.

In the first round matches of Under-14 boys’ singles today, Soren defeated statemate wildcard entrant Yash Jaiswal 4-1, 4-1 whereas Salim put it across Bihar’s Tilak Raj 5-4 (7-3), 4-0.

The 15-year-old Soren displayed good form to win the first round encounter.

“He started playing tennis less than a year back and had shown marked improvement,” said Ajit Kumar Singh, the chief coach of Mid Town Tennis Academy, where Soren is a trainee.

In other matches, Delhi’s Rahul Singh also advanced to the pre-quarterfinals in both the Under-14 and Under-16 boys’ singles. The youngster first ousted fourth seed Ishank Ravi of Bihar 4-2, 5-4 (7-4) in the Under-14 category then went on to beat third seed Sattwik Sinha Ray of Bengal 4-2, 5-4 (7-5) in the Under-16 section. Md Kamran Ali of Bengal ousted eighth seed Purus-hottam Dash of Orissa 4-1, 4-2 in the Under-16 boys’ singles.

His statemate Lalrindika posted a straight set win over seventh seed Ishank Ravi of Bihar 4-2, 4-1.

First round results of other Under-14 boys’ singles matches revealed the following result. Shukrit Guha (Bengal) won over Varun Nayar (Jharkhand) 4-0,4-0; Vaibhav Kumar (Bihar) beat Sushant Rimil Burh (Jharkhand) 4-0, 1-4, 4-1.
