Soon every shop and business establishment in the steel city will display posters on traffic do’s and don’ts in a bid to create mass awareness about road safety.
The decision was taken on Tuesday at a function organised as a part of Parivartan — a nine-day traffic campaign organised by district police in association with Jamshedpur Diocesan Education Centre that kicked off on September 11 — at the SCCI headquarters in Bistupur.
Apart from city SP Karthik S. and Dhalbhum SDO Prem Ranjan, members of different trade outfits, including SCCI, Jamshedpur Distributors’ Association, Sakchi Retail Merchant Association, Jamshedpur Transport Welfare Association, Singhbhum Merchant Dealers’ Association and Jamshedpur Chemist and Druggist Association, attended the meet.
“We have decided to bring out posters, highlighting rules to be followed on the road. The posters will be put up at various business stores, malls and retail outlets. The idea is to create awareness and avert mishaps,” said SCCI president Suresh Sonthalia.
Elaborating on the plan, Sonthalia said that the posters would stress on the need for wearing helmets and seat belts while driving.
The functionaries of various trade outfits also took a pledge on the occasion to obey traffic rules and encourage others to follow them.
Speaking at the event, the city SP welcomed the initiative taken by trade bodies. “We want to make Jamshedpur safe and the ongoing awareness campaign is an effort to realising that dream. The first-of-its-kind campaign is receiving good response for different sections of society,” he added.
Dhalbhum SDO Prem Ranjan said that the number of bikers using helmets had shot up manifold since the campaign was launched last week.
“Now, almost 80 per cent two-wheeler riders are wearing helmets in Jamshedpur, which is a good sign. Frequent drives conducted by the East Singhbhum traffic police and awareness campaigns have helped bring about this change in the mindset of commuters. We are planning more programmes in future,” he said.
