Ranchi, April 20: The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) defeated Banks Sports Board (BSB) in three direct sets at the inaugural match of the 19th departmental national volleyball championship for men that began at Ranchi University grounds today.
Playing under the captaincy of Y. Subba Rao, the ONGC team trounced its rival in the first set match with a margin of 3 points, the other two sets were won by a margin of 5 point each with scores at 25-22, 25-20 and 25-20.
BSB, in spite of its efforts under the captaincy of A. Mohanaran, could not gain control over the match.
However, its players drew the attention of the spectators with their sporting skill.
The match was played for 52 minutes. Sports and culture minister Sudarshan Bhagat inaugurated the match.
Volleyball Association of India executive president N.D. Sharma, Jharkhand Volleyball Association president Rameshwar Oraon, Ranchi University vice-chancellor S.S. Kushwaha and Ranchi MP Ram Tahal Choudhary were present during the inaugural match.
The championship would continue till April 27.
Eleven teams from different parts of the country are participating in the event.
