Jamshedpur: Helmet-less riders were in for a surprise when they were made to watch a short film before shelling out the fine in a drive conducted near Bistpur traffic thana on Wednesday.
In the three-hour drive, offenders were shown a 15-minute movie clip on the thana premises highlighting the importance of wearing helmets and following traffic safety rules. They were then let off after the payment of a fine of Rs 300.
Around 120 persons were caught during the drive.
Traffic DSP Vivekananda Thakur, who was present at the venue, said, "Through our continuous and regular drives, we have been able to bring about a general awareness about the importance of wearing helmets. Seven out of 10 two-wheeler riders now wear helmets," he said while addressing the offenders on the thana premises.
Jugsalai resident Pawan Agarwal, who was riding without helmet, said he got late for a doctor's appointment because of the drive.
"I was in a hurry because I had to take my mother to Tata Main Hospital outpatient's department where I had an appointment with the doctor. I got caught in the drive," he said.
Thakur said they planned to extend the campaign to other traffic thanas in the city.
There are three traffic thanas in Jamshedpur - Sakchi, Bistupur and Jugsalai - and two traffic police outposts in Mango and Golmuri.
