Jamshedpur, Oct. 8: For the first time, the campus recruitment programme at the National Institute of Technology (NIT) is witnessing a surge in telecom companies.

So far, after the campus recruitment process kicked off in July this year, two telecom companies, including state-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and Mahindra British Telecom visited the NIT campus and recruited students.

Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL) will participate in the recruitment process at the end of this month. The batch size for placement comprises 220 students from various streams of engineering of which about 135 students bagged jobs in various companies, including companies from the telecom sector.

With the first phase of the ongoing recruitment drive scheduled to end before the Durga Puja, the management of the institute is optimistic of reaching a target of 150.

According to statistics available from the training and placement cell of the institute, six students from various engineering streams, including production engineering, computer science and civil have bagged jobs in Mahindra British Telecom, a Pune-based telecom company.

While, state-owned BSNL recruited two students from electronics engineering stream.

?The upgradation of course curriculum in electronics, production and computer science streams and implementation of semester system has boosted the academic scenario. Getting an NIT status from a regional engineering college has given a new dimension to the institute. This is for the first time companies from the telecom sector have shown interest in recruiting students from the campus,? said N.K. Narayan, training and placement officer of NIT.

According to Narayan, the BSNL officials, who visited the NIT campus to recruit students earlier this month, opted for students from the electronics branch.

?The students of electronics have a good track record. Only those students who had scored more than 70 per cent marks in intermediate, matric or its equivalent and the semester examinations conducted by the institute were allowed to take the test,'' he said.

The students are also upbeat due to the positive response shown by companies, especially those from the telecom sector.

?Besides the traditional recruiters, this year, companies from the telecom sector are also targeting NIT students. Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited has also confirmed their participation in the recruitment drive. Several of my batch mates would opt for that company,? said Bhupal Kumar Pandey, a final year computer science student of the institute.

Sources at the institute?s training and placement cell said several Tata Group companies, including Tata Motors, Jamshedpur Utilities Services Company (Jusco) and Telcon participated in the recruitment process and selected students.
