New senior superintendent of police (SSP) Anoop T. Mathew on Thursday said he would follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Amol V. Homkar to control the law and order situation and streamline traffic across East Singhbhum district.
Mathew added that the district police, under the leadership of Homkar, had been performing well in controlling crimes both in the steel city and rural areas, and stressed on the need for maintaining the same team spirit to further improve policing.
"It is a pleasure moment for me that I am assuming a new responsibility. My predecessor Homkar and his team were doing an excellent job in curbing crime and streamlining vehicular movement. I am confident that the same team spirit will continue during my tenure too," he said after taking charge from Homkar at the SSP's office around 10am.
Rural SP Shailendra Kumar Sinha, city SP Chandan Jha, deputy superintendents of police and officers-in-charge of various thanas were present on the occasion.
Later, speaking to The Telegraph, Mathew said he would study the area-wise crime graphs and look into traffic issues in the city to work out strategies.
"It was my first day as the East Singhbhum SSP. I need some time to scrutinise the situation and pending cases. Then only I will be in a position to speak about my plan and strategies for policing the city and rural areas," said Mathew.
Mathew said he would meet people at his office and try to address their problems from Friday onward.
During his probation period, Mathew had a stint as the subdivision police officer in Ghatshila in 2009. A 2006-batch IPS, he served as the superintendent of police in Palamau and subsequently in Dumka before being transferred to East Singhbhum.
The district police have begun preparations to accord a grand farewell to the outgoing SSP Homkar.
"We are going to organise a grand farewell party for Homkar in a day or two. We are just waiting for the consent of Homkar," said a police officer while talking to The Telegraph.
Ever since the news of his transfer broke on Tuesday, police officers have been making a beeline for meeting Homkar at his residence.
