New rail track for Tata goods

Jamshedpur, Dec. 23: Another track connecting Dongaposi to Banspani railway station in the bordering areas of West Singhbhum and Orissa is in the offing.

The railway route has a single railway line.

The Chakradharpur division of South Eastern Railway?s decision will facilitate movement of raw-materials and finished products consigned by Tata Steel.

The Chakradharpur division has decided to extend the goods yard at the Tatanagar railway station to cater to the needs of the steel firm.

Senior divisional commercial manager of Chakradharpur division M.N. Ojha who met officials of Tata Steel today said a proposal has been sent to the Railway Board in New Delhi for laying a new railway line covering the 150 km stretch between Dongaposi and Banspani.

Tata Steel has set a target to increase its production capacity from the existing 4 million tonne to 7 million tonnes in the next couple of years. This will require heavy requirements of raw materials such as iron-ore and coal which is transported through this route.

General manager of South Eastern Railway R.R. Bhandari had met Tata Steel managing director B. Muthuraman in July. Discussions were held on improvement of facilities through railways so that it helps in smooth movement of raw materials and finished products by the steel company.

Ojha said Tata, being a major customer, the Railways have taken the matter seriously in ensuring improvement of transportation facilities for the company. efforts are also being made to open a computerised passenger reservation system at Bistupur.
