Chaibasa badminton coach Sachin Kumar Rana is in the big league as a mentor of a team of senior Indian men and women shuttlers to play in the upcoming Badminton Asia Team Championships in Hyderabad from February 15 to 21.
Badminton Association of India (BAI) announced the appointment on Tuesday, making 29-year-old Rana the first from Jharkhand to win the coveted coaching assignment.
India's top-bracket shuttlers - Saina Nehwal, P.V. Sindhu, P. Kashyap, K. Srikanth - will be a part of the event.
China, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and other Asian countries will take part.
"This assignment has boosted my confidence. It has made me believe in myself. I am looking forward to it," Rana, already in Hyderabad, told The Telegraph over phone.
Asked about his current assignment in Hyderabad, Rana said he was the coach of a core group of senior Indian men and women shuttlers at present sweating it out at a preparatory camp for this year's Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. Rana, had bagged this assignment in December last year.
"I am getting support from experienced mentors and am able to grasp new coaching techniques," Rana, an NIS-accredited coach who donned the Jharkhand jersey as a badminton player till 2012, said.
