Bokaro, April 13: A 29-year-old Bengal youth was branded police informer and impostor by a Maoist kangaroo court and beheaded at Khairachatar, a marketplace 42km from Bokaro steel city, last night.

Kasmar officer-in-charge Vijay Kumar said the victim, Ajay Kumar, was a resident of Jhalda in north Purulia.

He was kidnapped around 10pm and ferried to Khairachatar by 12 armed rebels. He was pronounced guilty of informing police about Maoist movement between Jharkhand and Bengal, and collecting levy posing as a rebel leader.

The court attended by four dozen rebels awarded him capital punishment. His head was chopped off and the body dumped at the marketplace. Before leaving, the Maoists pasted posters in Khudibera.

Gumla durbar

The deputy commissioner of Gumla today held a janata durbar at Jairagi village, a Maoist den 180km from the capital.

Some 2,000 people turned up to apprise DC Rahul Sharma of problems in implementation of various government schemes like MGNREGS and old-age pension. This was the first time a deputy commissioner visited the village, barely 6km from the Chhattisgarh border. Sharma, however, said it was routine for him. “I often visit remote villages and try to solve people’s problems.”
