Come Durga Puja, Mango’s pipe dream will be reality.

Tata Steel subsidiary Jusco — the executing agency of the much-touted Rs 64.18 crore Mango drinking water project — has apprised East Singhbhum district administration of handing over the infrastructure by September-end, thereby paving the way for water supply to a population of nearly 3 lakh by mid-October.

Additional deputy commissioner Ganesh Kumar on Thursday said that Jusco had informed his boss Amitabh Kaushal that construction work of all the six water towers, treatment plant and an intake reservoir on the banks of Subernarekha is almost complete. The plant will have a capacity to supply 48 million litres of water every day for the next 24 years.

“At the moment, leak in pipelines during trial runs is being plugged,” Kumar added.

Kaushal, on his part, has directed Mango Notified Area Committee (MNAC) special officer Sushil Kumar to arrange for public display of the status of the supply lines at strategic locations in the area and also at the district collectorate.

For the purpose, the urban local body is preparing 20ft by 40ft hoardings.

“The hoardings will feature a diagram of water supply lines, both old and new, and the connections needed to be taken by households,” said Sushil Kumar.

New pipelines have been laid along a stretch of nearly 148km in Mango and will see distribution from the six water towers at Sankosai, Gandhi Maidan, Old Purulia Road, Pardih (near Big Bazaar), MGM Medical College and Jawaharnagar.

The special officer said that out of 30,000 registered households in Mango, only 9,162 had applied for the new connections so far.

“A registered household needs to deposit between Rs1,200 and Rs1,500 as connection charges at the notified area office,” the special officer of MNAC added.
