Lecture on ethics at XLRI

Jamshedpur, Nov. 15: Father Gim Spillane, an internationally acclaimed professor of ethics based at the Sanatan Dharma University of Indonesia, will deliver the fourteenth annual JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics at the Xavier Labour Relations Institute (XLRI) on November 29.

This year?s topic is ?Tourism for national development or neo-colonialism.?

Over the years, the JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics has gained importance not only among the B-school students and its faculty but also among corporate circles, especially Tata Steel and its associate companies.

?It is an important event for XLRI as emphasis is laid on ethics and business principles. The XLRI community looks forward to this event with much enthusiasm,? said Father N. Casimir Raj, director of XLRI.

According to him, Father Gim Spillane was chosen to deliver this year?s JRD Tata oration, as he is internationally known for disseminating ethics and business principles.

The JRD Tata Foundation in Business Ethics, was established in 1991 to mark XLRI?s longstanding commitment and contribution to business ethics in India.

The foundation seeks to address itself by publicly affirming the urgent need for ethics in business and the need to bring about an appropriate culture in which it can thrive.

The foundation stresses on activities like annual JRD Tata Oration in Business Ethics, recognition and presentation of the JRD Tata award for business ethics to a distinguished businessman and setting-up of the JRD Tata chair in business ethics for the promotion of research in this field.

Former chairman of Tata Sons and doyen of Indian industries JRD Tata was the first speaker who delivered a lecture on business ethics in 1991.

The other list of speakers included Amrita Patel, Ramchandra Guha, Sir Mark Tully, Tarjani Vakil, Suresh Krishna and Jistice Bakhtavar Lentin.

Telesphore P. Cardinal Toppo delivered a lecture on the topic ?Corporate governance and the church?s contribution,? at the thirteenth annual JRD Tata Oration on Business Ethics last year.

The students of the B-school said the event helps them to get valuable tips on business ethics and principle, which they could better utilise in their future endeavour.

According to secretary of External Linkages cell of XLRI Allen Ebenezer Eric the oration on business ethics is an important event in the academic calendar of XLRI.

The students of both the streams ? Business Management and Personnel Management and Industrial Relations (PMIR) ? wait for the event, he said.

The members of the board of governors of XLRI, including the chairman of the board B. Muthuraman will grace the function.
