A centre to update Aadhaar details was inaugurated at Bistupur head post office in Jamshedpur on Thursday.
Postmaster-general of Jharkhand Shashi Shalini Kujur, who inaugurated the centre, also ensured that the data were being updated swiftly and with minimum errors.
With this, Jamshedpur becomes the first city in the Kolhan region and eleventh in the state to get an Aadhaar update centre. The first one was inaugurated in Ranchi on July 18 followed by Gumla, Lohardaga, Hazaribagh, Jhumri Telaiya, Giridih, Bagodar, Dhanbad and Bokaro.
Kujur said there would be a total 364 update centres across the state. Cities and towns will get preference in the first phase.
As of now, post offices will only update information and not offer new enrolment service. A nominal charge of Rs 25 will have to be paid for updating information.
"New enrolment will require a different set of equipment that is not happening at the moment. It will take sometime. People can visit their post offices in case they require to incorporate any change. We have recruited and trained manpower for the work to ensure minimum error. In fact, we will not process more than 40 applications per day," Kujur said.
Kujur said the Singhbhum division would get another five update hubs at Golmuri, Chaibasa, Tatanagar, Mango and Sonari post offices before August 15.
There will be a total of 14 update centres in Kolhan that comprises East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum and Seraikela-Kharsawan.
Applicants will have to fill a form and provide the officials with the supporting documents to request the change.
"Those who want to correct their date of birth will have to furnish their birth certificates as the supporting document. Providing proper documents will enhance our speed of work," said Vimal Kishore, senior superintendent of post office (Singhbhum).
Kujur said Dhanbad was set to get its first Post Office Passport Seva Kendra (POPSK) after Jamshedpur and Deoghar. The post office is waiting for a go-ahead from the ministry of external affairs to start the service. The POPSK will also come up in Hazaribagh, Medininagar, Daltonganj and Bokaro later. Officials said the Jamshedpur POPSK processes 40 per cent of the state's total passports.
