Jamshedpur, Oct. 27: Killer wheels claimed the life of yet another person in the steel city.

A speeding truck hit a 45-year-old railway official near Namda Bustee on Burmamines-Golmuri Road this morning. The victim, Narendra Kumar Prasad, was the office superintendent at Tatanagar railway station. He was on his way to bring his daughter from tuition when the accident took place.

He was riding his scooter down the road when a speeding Tata 407 truck hit him from behind knocking him down the vehicle that led to severe head injuries.

The accident took place at 10am. The driver of the truck fled the spot leaving the man to writhe in pain.

The resident of Burma Road in Burmamines, Prasad was lying on the road for over one hour after which passers-by took him to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College and Hospital. The doctors on duty declared him dead on arrival.

Officer in charge of Golmuri police station Narendra Kumar Singh said that Prasad was severely injured and died on spot. Singh said that it is not known under what circumstances the accident occurred.

“As there were very few people plying on the road it was quite late when the man was finally taken to the hospital. He died on spot before passers-by took him to the hospital. Might be he was talking on the cellphone while riding his scooter as the cellphone was lying some distance away from the body. The accident can also be a result of reckless driving by the truck driver. We are investigating the case and would find out the answers to the questions soon,” he said.

So far, the sleuths have not come across any eyewitness to the incident. The officer-in-charge stated they have registered a case of rash driving and attempt to murder not amounting to death against unknown person and have confiscated the scooter and the cellphone from the spot.

Officials at railway station said Prasad was very popular among them. Soon after the news of the accident spread railway officials and relatives rushed to the medical college premises. In another incident, a two-year-old toddler was killed on the spot when an autorickshaw plying at a high speed hit her at Jagannathpur in West Singhbhum this morning. The daughter of Pintu Singh was playing on the road in front her house when the accident took place.
