Jusco in big league - Tata subsidiary bags govt contracts in five states

Jamshedpur, Sept. 16: The Tata Steel subsidiary, Jamshedpur Utilities and Services Company (Jusco), is making news for all the right reasons.

The company is slowly coming on its own, bagging prestigious projects across several states of India.

Since the company’s inception in April 2004, it initially concentrated on Tata Steel projects and maintaining Jamshedpur.

But Jusco is now taking up challenging projects with the governments of Jharkhand, Bihar, Bengal, Orissa and Madhya Pradesh, as well as private projects.

In addition, Jusco is also bidding for important projects in several metros.

In Bengal, Jusco has bagged the contract to augment the existing water supply system at Haldia and also to lay 700 mm dia DI K9 pipeline from Goenkhali water treatment plant to the Chaitanyapur pumping station at Haldia under Haldia Development Authority in October 2005.

The Rs 220-cr company has also made in-roads in Calcutta by bagging the contract for the development and management of water supply and sewerage system for the blue-chip IT hub of the metropolis, sector V, Salt Lake, Calcutta.

The project is on a 30-year BOT basis. The contract includes the creation and subsequent management of infrastructure like transfer of treated water, water supply distribution network, pump house and underground reservoir, sewage collection network, sewage pumping stations and sewage treatment plant.

In Madhya Pradesh, the company has also got a firm foothold.

In August 2007, the Bhopal Municipal Corporation awarded a maintenance contract to Jusco for a part of the town’s water management system. The one-year, Rs 2.20-cr project would look at the leak detection and rectification. The project is funded by the Asian Development Bank under the urban water supply and environmental improvement initiative of the Madhya Pradesh Government.

In Bihar, Jusco has bagged the augmentation of drinking water supply scheme of Muzzaffarpur Town (2nd phase) from public health and engineering department, government of Bihar. The plan includes design, supply, erection and commissioning of high-yielding bore-well pump house, rising mains, 173-km distribution network, elevated service reservoirs, chlorination systems and subsequent operation and maintenance of the system for 6 months.

In neighbouring Orissa, Jusco would be involved with the sports complex and indoor stadium at Keonjhar, Orissa.

For home turf Jharkhand, Jusco was entrusted with the state’s first special economic zone at Adityapur, which would concentrate on opportunities for export of automobiles and auto components.

Jusco would also distribute power to power-starved Seraikela-Kharsawan district after it obtains a power distribution license.

Private projects include supply, laying and commissioning of cross-country raw water from Kharkhai river intake pump house to Turamdih plant and colony area crossing six villages and seven major roads for the Uranium Corporation of India, constructions for 2XT-900 Oxygen Plant at Praxair, laying drinking water pipeline of 125 mm dia and clarified waterline and relocation of ash slurry pipeline for Tata Bluescope Limited, Jamshedpur.

In addition, Jusco would also be responsible for the operation and maintenance of town water management activities of Tata Motors Ltd., Jamshedpur, for four years.

This contract requires operation and maintenance of the water treatment plant and distribution of treated waste to 8,000 domestic connections and other public places in the Telco township.
