JMM leader under attack

Jamshedpur: The JMM central committee secretary Munnu Thakur was seriously injured when a gang of three unidentified persons made an attempt on his life by lobbing country-made bombs before his office on Wednesday evening.

The incident occured at Amlatola under Sadar Chaibasa police station in the West Singhbhum?s district headquarters.

Besides Thakur, five others were critically injured. One of the victims, is a year-old child, Komal Singhdev, son of Rajesh Singhdev. The victims who sustained splinter injuries have been admitted to Sadar Chaibasa Hospital. The condition of all the injured is said to be critical.

According to police, Munnu Thaku who is said to have links with the mafiosa was sitting before his party office on Wednesday evening.

He was talking to some of his colleagues and local contractors, when there was a loud bang. Before he could realise anything, there were two more explosions in quick succession. Eyewitness account state that the attackers, who had come on foot, disappeared by taking advantage of the smoke caused by the explosions.

After the incident residents ran for cover upon hearing the screams following the explosions. The superintendent of police, West Singhbhum, Navin Kumar Singh said the attack was in sequel to a personal enmity of Thakur,

Students debarred

Jamshedpur: Over 20-odd Class X students of a city English-medium school were prevented from sitting for their annual practical examination on Wednesday.

The students were held back because their parents had refused to pay ?admission fees? to the school?s management, for their re-admission to the Plus Two.

NGO protest

Giridih: The Jharkhand Ulgulan Manch and Jharkhand Ulgulan Mahila Manch together held a daylong dharna at the Tower Chowk on Wednesday against the government?s stand on the displacement issue. The organisations will also hold a dharna before the Raj Bhavan, Ranchi, on February 8.

Forum dharna

Giridih: More than hundred members of Giridih Citizens? Forum held a maha dharna on Wednesday at Natraj Chowk, where they demanded that the district administration take action against the land mafias operating in the district.

Tusker drive

Jamshedpur: The Kolhan forest division on Wednesday started a drive to push out elephants from populated areas of Khutpani block in the adjoining West Singhbhum district.

AIDS awareness

Ranchi: The psychology department of the Nirmala College organised an AIDS awareness programme where students shared trivia on AIDS and precautions. The students also staged a cultural programme comprising skits and one-act plays.

Chess win

Ranchi: Pranav Kumar of DAV Kapil Dev School won the under-20 chess competition organised by Jharkhand Chess Research and Development. Pranav was jointly placed with Pintu of Saraswati Shishu Vidya Mandir and Asim Bihari Sharan of St Thomas School with 6 points each.

Mahotsava

Hazaribagh: Participants from 20-odd states took part in the India mahotsava that started on Wednesday in the city. On the first day the team members took oath before deputy commissioner Rahul Purwar.

Child kidnapped

Jamshedpur: A two-year-old boy, who was allegedly kidnapped from Sidhgora Market on Tuesday evening is yet to be traced. The police have sent a team of officials to Patamda and adjoining districts of West Bengal in search of the missing child.
