Joint petition on Governors
Ranchi: The Telengana Rashtra Samity (TRS) and the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) will jointly urge President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam to ensure that Governors play a more active role in implementation of the Fifth Schedule of the Constitution, which relates to the development of tribes and tribals. Both the parties have come to an understanding on the matter after meetings in the capital during the past two days.
TRS representative and MP from Andhra Pradesh’s Warangal constituency D. Ravindra Naik held a meeting with senior JMM leaders, including the party’s Rajya Sabha member Stephen Marandi and other legislators, on the matter. “This is a serious issue because according to the provisions of Schedule V of the Constitution, it is the Governors who directly supervise matters relating to development of tribes and tribals in any state,” Naik said.
He claimed that usually Governors “are not serious about issues relating to tribals and tribes” and added that his party would request the President to “direct the Governors to take an interest in these matters”.
