Jamshedpur, June 12: Wondering why your child is clumsy or fidgety?
He could be suffering from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHT).
With growing competition and mounting peer pressure, ADHT is becoming a major problem among city school children.
But thankfully, parents and teachers in Jamshedpur have professional help at hand to deal with such problems.
City-based Inner Wheel Club has recently launched a campaign in city schools to help students fight the disorder.
To be carried out in over 10 schools, this project would help ADHT children mostly at the primary level and work to develop their strengths.
“Years ago, my young son showed the same symptoms, but we thought they were normal. When we went to USA, a relative pointed out that my child was suff-ering from ADHT. He told me that not getting proper treatment could lead to serious consequences. I then helped my son get rid of the problem,” said Neela Kumar, a senior member at Inner Wheel Club, who developed the entire concept of the project.
With her personal insight and study material prepared by the Department of Health and Human Sciences, National Institute of Health, USA, Kumar approach- ed city schools, including Baug-E-Jamshed, Tarapore School, Little Flower School and Little Hearts.
“Four to five children in a class of 40 students today suffer from the disease. Timely identification and treatment for them is vital,” said Kumar.
Inner Wheel Club members recently conducted a session for over 100 teachers from several schools who would now help to identify ADHT children in their respective classes.
“Once such children are identified, we would visit the schools and train teachers and students to deal with the disorder and also provide schools with materials brought from USA,” said Varsha Gandhi, club secretary.
“It’s tough to convince parents that their child has ADHT,”said Kumar.
Kumar added that he plans to form a forum of ADHT parents in the future.
