The government has decided to transplant, uproot or trim trees along Ranchi's proposed twin flyovers.
A preliminary survey, conducted by supervising firm Jharkhand Urban Infrastructure Development Company (JUIDCL) and the forest department, has identified 358-plus trees that need to be removed to facilitate construction work.
"For the 905-metre Kantatoli-Booty Road flyover, we have identified 43 trees on government land. For the 2.34km LPN Nath Shahdeo Chowk-Kartik Oraon Chowk, we have identified 315 trees. These are maintained by the forest department. There are also trees on private land. We are waiting for directives from the forest department," said an official of JUIDCL.
It has been decided that all trees up to 14-inch diameter will be relocated. "We will carry out measurements before transplanting them," he added.
Ranchi DFO Rajiv Lochan Bakshi said a joint technical meeting had been convened in this regard on April 13.
"We will try our best to continue construction work by axing the minimum number of trees. For every tree relocated or felled, we will plant two new saplings. JUIDCL has been asked to identify land for the same," Bakshi said.
Incidentally, the forest department does not have a transplantation machine, which costs Rs 4 crore. Bakshi said the same might be done manually.
