Jamshedpur: From treating cancer through a mobile application to developing an alarm system for homes, the first edition of science exhibition-cum-contest organised by National Academy of Sciences, India (Jharkhand chapter), in collaboration with CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory (NML) was a pot of blooming ideas.

Over 125 students from 21 schools across the state, including 19 from Jamshedpur, took part in the exhibition held at Rajendra Vidyalaya in Sakchi. The exhibition is a part of the month-long celebrations to observe the 125th birth anniversary of astrophysicist Meghnad Saha on October 6.

Students took part in three parallel events - poster competition, PowerPoint presentation and model-making on themes like keep your environment clean, healthcare management and latest technology of tomorrow.

Some of the schools that took part are Sacred Heart Convent School, Loyola School, Baldwin Farm Area High School, Srikrishna School-Deoghar and St Xavier's School-Chaibasa.

In the model-making section, Class VIII students of Rajendra Vidyalaya developed a house alarm system, which can be controlled from anywhere across the world. The system function with the help of infrared sensor and dual tone multi frequency (DTMF) technology.

"You just need to call on your old phone that is connected to the alarm system. Using the DTMF technology one can call on the number, which will automatically switch on the alarm system. The system will then send an alarm text message to the owner of the house as well to the nearby police station. Interestingly, the whole system is soundless so the thief will be unaware of the entire operation and can be easily nabbed," explained Shiven Sharma, a Class VIII student of Rajendra Vidyalaya.

On the other hand, schoolchildren also showcased PowerPoint presentations on various topics assigned to them. Nidhi Agarwal, a Class XI student of Sacred Heart Convent School presented an idea on how mobile applications can reduce the cost of cancer treatment and how robots can help in scanning and analysing medical reports.

Somesh Ghosh, a Class IX student of Baldwin Farm Area High School in Kadma, presented the idea of how mobile applications can make farming hassle-free. "I really want to develop an application on agriculture to help our farmers. This is just an idea and I wish to develop it someday," said Somesh.

Students also took part in a poster-making competition highlighting topics like environmental conservation and science of tomorrow.

The prize distribution ceremony will be held at CSIR-NML Jamshedpur on October 5. Prizes will be given away by Padmashri Sankar Kumar Pal, former director of Indian Statistical Institute, Calcutta.
