Jamshedpur: Jamshedpur Women's College in Bistupur will organise a two-day awareness workshop on embroidery skills from Tuesday.

The first-of-its-kind initiative by the college's home science department is aimed at promoting embroidery as one of the career options for students. Around 220 students, some from Graduate School College for Women, have registered themselves for the workshop.

Both are constituent colleges of Kolhan University.

The two day event will offer training on five kinds of embroidery skills - chikankari, kantha stitch, phulkari, kashmiri stitch, zardosi and mirrorwork also known as sheeshakari.

Parallel training sessions will be held in different classrooms. If the students find embroidery interesting enough to pursue it as a career, the college will connect them to the trainers. The workshop will also include sessions on crafts theory and and sales so that they students know how to market their products in case they start a business.

"At present, so much emphasis is being put on skill and capacity building. We need to promote these crafts so that more people can take them up and build a career out of it," Purnima Kumar, principal of Jamshedpur Women's College said at a news meet on Monday.

The college will also organise an exhibition where those students who haven't registered for the workshop can put up their stalls to showcase and sell their products, especially handicrafts.

"It's not always about jobs. We want to make our girls ready for self-employment and entrepreneurship. We know it's difficult but that's how we learn and that is why we will keep arranging such events," Kumar said.
