Jamshedpur, Feb. 21: Governor M.O.H. Farook, also the chancellor of universities, today visited two city colleges and appreciated their efforts.
The governor’s first stop was Karim City College in the morning, where he congratulated the minority institution for its efforts to impart education to especially the weaker sections of society. Visibly impressed, Farook said with its kind of available resources and quality of education, the college should become a deemed university.
“The need of the hour is to impart education to the needy and Karim City College as a minority institution is doing a wonderful job. Unless minority students receive good education, they will lag behind. Karim City College is a quality education centre and should become a deemed university,” said Farook.
Visiting various departments, the governor also appreciated the string of skills-based courses that the institution had been providing to students.
He also bemoaned how many educational institutions had become “a business” and urged academics not to involve business, politics and favouritism in education. “The primary motto for people here should be to provide quality education at affordable prices,” said Farook.
Later in the evening, he visited Jamshedpur Women’s College to inaugurate Shiksha Bhavan, a building for BEd and MEd classes.
He also clicked on a computer to lay the ‘online foundation’ of an indoor stadium on college campus to cost around Rs 34 lakh, to promote sports among girls and women.
“I hope that the upcoming stadium promotes sports among women here. The Jamshedpur Women’s College is by far one of the best hubs in the region working for the cause of education for women in a state like Jharkhand where female literacy is still low,” said Farook.
A cultural programme by students and the release of a multilingual bulletin by Farook to commemorate International Mother Language Day were other highlights.
Kolhan University vice chancellor Salil Kumar Roy, pro vice chancellor Laksmisree Banerjee, senior university officials, faculty and staffers were also present on the occasion.
Tomorrow, the governor will attend a function at Michael John Auditorium in Bistupur, before leaving for Ranchi.
