Jamshedpur, Feb. 24: The city will pulse with energy and excitement on the 171st birth anniversary of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata.
In a fitting tribute to the man who started it all, Tata Steel and its subsidiary Jusco have decided to celebrate March 3 — popularly known as Founder’s Day — with the commitment of energy consumption.
Jusco, which is entrusted with the task of lighting up the city during the celebrations, will use 50 per cent LED (light-emitting diode) lamps at Jubilee Park instead of power-consuming incandescent bulbs. The park will wear the lights from March 2 to 7.
Last time, 10 per cent LEDs were used as an experiment. “It was a huge success. This time, the quota of LEDs is being upped by another 40 per cent. We hope to save a lot on power,” said Manmohan Singh, the electrical (maintenance) chief of Jusco.
The theme of this year’s Founder’s Day is sustainability and, so, stress is being laid on eco-friendly and energy-efficient methods.
Singh said LEDs had a number of advantages over incandescent lamps. They require less energy, have longer life and are more handy being smaller in size. “They are relatively expensive. But then, you save on power.”
Using LEDs, the organisers expect 20-30 per cent less power consumption. Normal consumption per evening ranges between 2.5MVA (mega volt ampere) and 3MVA.
Jusco has roped in three artists from Chandernagore, Bengal, for the job. Some local agencies will work with them. Illumination at Jubilee Park will replicate models of sustainable growth like climate change and water conservation.
Jusco officials said special care would be taken to light up Jayanti Sarovar with a model of Eiffel Tower. Tata zoo authorities do not want to disturb fruit bats, as it is their breeding season.
