Jamshedpur: The proposed crematorium for canines at Parvati Ghat in Bistupur has run into rough weather.
Jamshedpur Kennel Club, which was setting up the crematorium with Jusco's help, has decided to shelve the project after Jamshedpur Notified Area Committee (JNAC) raised objections and stopped work.
City units of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal have also raised objections to the project and threatened to lock the crematorium gates if the project was commissioned.
Sources said even if Jamshedpur Kennel Club and Parvati Ghat management committee started the crematorium after obtaining JNAC's permission, the right-wing outfits might put a spanner in the project.
"The crematorium can function only after JNAC's permission. Let's see what happens," Parvati Ghat management committee secretary Deependra Bhatt. The committee is supposed to run the facility.
JNAC special officer Sanjay Pandey said Jusco had not taken permission for the crematorium.
"We had asked Jusco on whose permission the crematorium was built, but the company has so far not given any reply. We will demolish the structure," he added.
Kennel Club secretary R.K. Sinha came up with a vague reply on the fate of the project.
"Let's see what happens. I am not in Jamshedpur. Let me come back and see what can be done," he said.
The shade for the crematorium has already been erected. Jusco has also provided electricity and water connections. Only a furnace remains to be installed.
Former city unit president of VHP Arun Singh said they would not allow the crematorium to come up inside Parvati Ghat.
"The Hindus consider crematorium as a sacred place. How can cremation of dogs take place inside the same compound where the final rites of humans are conducted? We will lock the gates of the dog crematorium if its opens," he added.
He said VHP had raised objections to the project even before the JNAC.
"Dogs are also part of our society, but we can't support this project," Singh added.
Bajrang Dal city unit co-convenor Anirudh Giri supported Singh said.
"The project has to be shelved. The crematorium can come up at any other place, but not at Parvati Ghat," he said.
Dog lovers were critical of the objections raised against the crematorium.
"Dogs should also be bid a dignified farewell. Why are objections being raised when people are showing respect for canines? I am very sad and also upset with the objections," Kadma resident Ramni Iyer said.
