Jamshedpur, Aug. 30: Bengali literature’s master sleuth shall now don the grease paint in the steel city, this time only to cook up a riot of laughter.
Sabyasachi Chakraborty, who plays the Charimar-wielding, nut-cracking Feluda in the screen renditions of Satyajit Ray’s edge-of-the-seat thrillers — Baksho Rohoshyo and Bombaiyer Bombete — will be in the city next month to enthrall theatre buffs with Chalo Potol Tuli, a comedy.
The event will take place at the XLRI Auditorium on September 3 and is part of the 78th year celebrations of the Jamshedpur Mahil Samiti.
Chakraborty will be accompanied by his co-star Kheyali Dastidar, who is also a popular face of the Bengali film and television industry.
Chakraborty, of course, is a recognised face among both the English and Bengali movie audiences.
Be it Navinchandra Rai in Parineeta to Minister Deodhar in Khakee or a terrorist in Dil Se, he has proved his mettle with roles across the board. He’s also earned plaudits for parallel movies like Nishijapon and Ek Je Ache Kanya.
Feluda, though, is no alien to the organisation as Soumitra Chatterjee, veteran Bengali actor and Ray’s original Feluda (the maestro had scripted the character keeping Chatterjee in mind), had performed a play on its platinum jubilee celebrations.
According to the treasurer of the Samiti, Tapati Chatterjee, the organisation, which was born in 1928, was inspired by Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, who had visited the city to meet his brother and sister-in-law.
It became popular in no time and the members soon started a Bengali medium school in Bistupur.
The school exists still, though the medium of instruction has been changed to English. Classes of adult education are also held on its premises every evening, Chatterjee further said.
The anniversary celebrations will also comprise the annual exhibition on September 10, where ladies will put art and craft items on display.
