Jamshedpur, June 14: The guest list at Akhtar Hussain’s wedding in Mumbai included quite a few of the rich and famous. Bollywood comedian Johnny Lever was one of them.

Akhtar was arrested from Dubai on June 12 for allegedly trying to sell Indian nuclear secrets to diplomatic missions in the UAE.

Thirty-five-year-old Akhtar Hussain, who once lived in Azadnagar, got married a few years ago at Mumbai. He was quizzed by the police at Mumbai yesterday and has been brought to New Delhi for further grilling.

The city police, while investigating into his background during his stay in the city, have stumbled upon a marriage photograph of his where he is seen with actor Johnny Lever.

“We have kept the photograph with us in case we need it,” superintendent of police Arun Oraon said.

Police said Akhtar liked to live lavishly and enjoyed the company of women.

Oraon said the city police were “surprised” at the information they gathered about Akhtar since yesterday. “He was unemployed when he lived here. But he maintained a high standard of living. We need to find out the channels of his income. He was the breadwinner of the family along with Adil, one of his three brothers,” Oraon said.

After leaving the steel city, Ahktar moved to Delhi and later to Mumbai. The city police have been informed that he bought a house at Safdarjung in New Delhi.

The city police also have information that Akhtar had several fake passports. “We even have information that he was allegedly involved in smuggling of uranium from the Jadugoda-based Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL). We are investigating whether there he had any ISI links,” a police official, involved with the probe, said. He, however, added that it would take time for all this to be verified.

Police said Akhtar had once gone out of the city with some of his friends. “During the tour, he lost his briefcase that contained $1,800 and his passport. His friends suggested that he lodge an FIR in the city for the passport. But Akhtar did not report the matter to the police,” Oraon said. The police have decided to ascertain whether Akhtar had made any fake passport in the city. According to Oraon, Akhtar had visited the United States once when he used to stay here. The police are trying to find out why he went there.

Akhtar’s father, who died in the early 1980s, was from Allahabad. He shifted to the city in the late 70s.

The police have questioned two uncles of Akhtar who still reside in the city. “We wanted to find out if they have any links with Akhtar. But both of them claimed that they have not been in touch with him after he left the city in 1996,” police said.

Some of the residents of Azadnagar where Akhtar used to stay said they often used to see Akhtar burning sheaves of papers. “We used to ask him why he is burning the papers. He used to say that they were old documents that he wanted to get rid of. People don’t usually burn useless paper, they just throw them away. It could be possible that those were some incriminating documents,” they said.
