Jamshedpur, Nov. 21: The recovery of a cell phone charger and some compact discs in a surprise raid at the Ghagidih Jail today have given some hopes to the police of arresting the fugitive criminal, Akhilesh Singh.
Acting on a tip off, deputy superintendent of police (city) Pravin Kumar Srivastava carried out a surprise raid in Ghagidih Jail.
Accompanying Srivastava was the sub-divisional officer of Dhalbhum, Gosai Oraon and DSP (law and order), Rajkumar Lakra.
According to sources, police had been tipped off that dreaded criminal Ranjit Chowdhary, Akhilesh’s right-hand man, had been keeping in touch with some of the inmates lodged at Ghagidih Jail through mobile phones.
Sources alleged that with the help of these inmates Singh was extorting money from city businessmen.
At present, the Ghagidih Jail has inmates like Rajesh Kashyap, Joga Rao, Pradeep Guha and Ravi, all of whom are dreaded criminals and linked with Ranjit Chowdhary.
Police suspect that the charger was meant for a cell phone from within the prison by either of the criminals to keep in touch with Ranjit Chowdhary. None of the jails here has a cell phone “jammer”.
Police sources said that today’s raid was an eye-opener for the police as when the raid was conducted at the premises of Ghagidih Jail, many businessmen and traders were present who, police suspect had come to pay protection money to the associates of Ranjit Chowdhary.
Pravin Srivastava told The Telegraph that after the murder of leading businessman Om Prakash Kabra this month, the crowd at Ghagidih Jail had become larger and the police had become suspicious.
“Today we got some definite information about Ranjit Chowdhary and his business links with murder accused Rajesh Kashyap. We are on his trail and hope to nab Ranjit Chowdhary shortly. Once he is caught, it will be very easy to nail Akhilesh Singh,” said the police officer. Police suspect that the charger belongs to Rajesh Kashyap, another criminal, as it was found near his cell.
Today’s tip-off followed the rounding up of a notorious criminal linked to Akhilesh Singh and Ranjit Chowdhary.
Information from the arrested person led to the police raid at Ghagidih Jail today. Police are maintaining maximum secrecy regarding the arrest.
