Jamshedpur, March 14: Jharkhand has become the first state to introduce ultra light compound bows, which weigh less than 2.5 kg.

The imported bows have been recently procured by the state archery body to enhance the performance of its archers at the world championship.

Manufactured by HOYT, the Unites States-based company, which is renowned for manufacturing archery equipment and accessories, the ultra-light compound bows has a lower torque and light handle with a window on the side.

The Jharkhand Archery Association (JAA) has procured two ultra-light bows costing Rs 50,000 each.

The archers of the JAA had, of late, been using slightly heavy compound bows, which have also been manufactured by HOYT. Shooting with these bows not only put stress on the arms of the archers but also affect their accuracy while shooting, said Sanjeeva Singh, secretary of JAA. He said Jharkhand is the first state in the country to introduce the latest model of ultra-light bows.

?No other state in the country has procured these bows,? said Singh, a former Asian gold medallist.

?The HOYT company has introduced shoot through (new compound bows) in January 2005.

?We came across these bows at the recently concluded Asian Circuit Meet in Bangkok. The bow was used by a top-bracket archer from Iran. We purchased the bows from an agent of the company who had visited Bangkok,? added Singh, an Arjuna awardee.

Comparing the ultra-light bow with the earlier one, Singh said the shock absorbers in sufficient numbers on the former model gives less fatigue impact on the arm of the archer.

?This results in better accuracy,? he said.

He said the state archers were making 1,350 points with the earlier model of the compound bow.

But the point level has jumped to 1,393 while shooting with the ultra light bows. The difference in point level is apparent,? the JAA secretary added while adjusting the strings of the latest model of a bow.

Singh said the bows would be used by the archers during the national preparatory camp for the world championship to be held in Madrid, Spain, in June.

He added that he hoped that the archers would be able to perform well with the ultra-light bows at the championship.

He added that the JAA has requested the state sports ministry to grant Rs 12 lakh to purchase more such bows .

According to the senior JAA functionary, there are several attachments with the latest model of the compound bow.

?We have readied one of the bows, which has been taken by our archers to Bangalore for the preparatory camp which kicked off today,? said Singh. He would be present at the camp as a coach.
