Jamshedpur, Aug. 30: Keeping in mind the security of train passengers, the railway protection force has sent a proposal to the Centre for “bomb detection and disposal squads” at the zonal and divisional headquarters.
Railway Police Force’s inspector-general (South Eastern Railway) T.K. Sanyal said the squad would be stationed at the four divisions of SER, including Ranchi and Chakradharpur, and move whenever there was any mishap at the Naxalite-hit stations and tracks.
“The objective is to protect the lives of passengers,” Sanyal said. He said the zonal squad would be stationed at Garden Reach, the headquarters of SER, and could act based on the requirement of the divisions.
“Both squads would co-ordinate to control the mishaps, whether it is a Naxalite attack or train dacoity, or any other mishaps related with the security of passengers,” said the inspector-general.
Sanyal added that right from inspectors to jawans of the RPF, all have been deputed in the four divisions of SER would undergo commando training. “The commando-trained jawans can handle the situation in crowded stations and coaches. We will able to control mishaps in the platforms and moving trains once all jawans are trained,” said Sanyal said.
According to him, around 200 RPF jawans have undergone guerrilla training in Tripura.
“There is refresher course for aged jawans, who cannot train either for commando or guerrilla warfare,” the inspector-general said, adding that there was provision to set up closed-circuit cameras to monitor the activities of passengers and hooligans at Tatanagar station and Kharagpur.
“These are the two big stations under SER where thousands of passengers catch trains. We want to monitor the passengers with the help of cameras,” said Sanyal, revealing that his department would soon place orders for the high-tech cameras.
