Patna, Aug. 23: With the CPM?s separate call for a Bihar bandh and the Samajvadi Party?s support for the earlier call by the united Left coordination comprising five parties, tomorrow?s bandh is destined to create ripples in the political corridor of Buta Singh?s Bihar.
The main demand for the Left is the recall of Governor Buta Singh and his adviser Arun Pathak.
CPM?s separate call for a bandh is in solidarity with all the demands of the other Left parties, except for the main demand of the governor?s recall, is seen as an indirect support to the Left coordination?s call and a victory to the entire Left.
Being a UPA ally at the Centre, the CPM has cleverly chosen to avoid the demand for the removal of Buta Singh, who is a Congressman.
Ramvilas Paswan?s Lok Janshakthi Party, meanwhile, chose to remain away from the bandh on the grounds that it mainly targets Buta Singh. This is being seen as a setback to the much-hyped third front formation in the state for the coming elections.
The Left coordination comprising CPI, CPI-ML, Forward Bloc, RSP and SUCI had held a joint convention of August 18 and unanimously decided to make the bandh a success.
The demands include, besides the recall of governor and his adviser, a CBI inquiry into the flood relief scam, implementation of food for work programme, and effective steps in controlling crime and corruption.
in state welfare schemes.
The Samajvadi Party (SP) would ?not only support the call, but also hit the road to make the bandh a success,? a party source said. The SP has already rendered its support to the formation of the Third Front, initiated chiefly by the CPI and CPI-ML.
Sounding quite positive on the Third Front initiative, the CPI held that the LJP?s staying away from the bandh tomorrow was not going to affect the initiative.
CPI state secretary Badri Narayan Lal stressed the need for a CBI probe into the flood relief scam. ?Vigilance is part of the state and so a probe by the same may not bear any positive fruit, as the agency would try to protect the state?s own bureaucrats involved in the scam. So an impartial probe would mean at least the CBI takes it up,? he said.
