Ranchi: Buckling under police pressure, Bokaro-based footballer and coach Ajay Kumar Singh, 40, who allegedly shot dead a friend and injured another following a quarrel involving his wife on Wednesday night, surrendered in a local court in the steel town on Saturday.

Singh, a former player for renowned Calcutta clubs like Mohan Bagan and Mohammedan Sporting Club, turned up at first-class judicial magistrate Nirmala Barla's court to surrender at 11am.

Rajesh Kujur, officer in-charge of Harla police station, where the murder case has been lodged, confirmed the developments over phone.

"We have also moved a petition in court seeking his custody for interrogation and further probe. We hope to get it soon," he said.

On Wednesday night, Ajay had a fight with his wife Anjola (37), a former archer from Manipur, after which he fired indiscriminately, killing friend Sunil Gupta (38) on the spot and injuring another, Amresh Kumar Singh (39), the crime sending waves of shock among the sports fraternity in Jharkhand and beyond.

Footballer Ajay had a fight with Anjola who then "took refuge" at their friend and neighbour Amresh's house, Bokaro city DSP Ajay Kumar said. Her choice of refuge seems to have infuriated Ajay and he rushed to Amresh's house with a revolver around 11.50pm on Wednesday. Ajay fired indiscriminately, killing Sunil, their common friend who had tried to mediate, and injuring Amresh. Sunil died as he took a bullet in the head. Amresh, who took a bullet wound on his leg, is recovering.

Several unlicensed firearms were found in Ajay's house later, which led to the arrest of Anjola, on concealment charge, on Thursday. His elder brother Rajesh was arrested for helping his escape.

Ajay contested Assembly polls on Ajsu Party and All India Trinamul Congress tickets in 2004 and 2009 but lost both times. A resident of sector IX-A in Bokaro, he ran a football academy in the steel city.
