Chandigarh: Punjab and Haryana High Court on Thursday granted bail to Vikas Barala, the son of Haryana BJP chief Subhas Barala who has been accused of stalking disc jockey Varnika Kundu.

Since his arrest last August, Vikas has been lodged in Chandigarh's Burail jail with his friend and co-accused Ashish.

While accepting his bail plea, Justice Lisa Gill warned Vikas not to try to influence the trial, going on in a Chandigarh court. Vikas was also warned against making any attempt to contact Varnika or her family.

Vikas, 23, has been charged with stalking and attempting to abduct Varnika, 29, the daughter of an IAS officer, on the intervening night of August 4 and 5, 2017.

"No application was filed on behalf of the prosecution alleging that the accused had made any attempt to influence anybody," said Vinod Ghai, the counsel for Vikas.

Varnika's cross-examination concluded on Tuesday.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, Varnika's father V.S. Kundu said: "We had been opposing the bail as Varnika's testimony had not been recorded, and we wanted that to happen before the accused were let out of custody on bail. So today we did not oppose the bail.... We have full faith in the functioning of our judicial system."
