Srinagar, March 24 :     Deputy inspector-general (Baramullah range) S.P. Vaid and three of his security guards were injured in an ambush at PuthuKhah on the Srinagar-Uri National Highway late last night. Vaid?s personal security guard died in the attack. Though there has been a spurt in militant attacks on the state police in the past six months, this is the first time they have targeted a senior officer. Recently, militants raided a district police lines in chief minister Farooq Abdullah?s constituency. Police said heavily-armed militants ambushed Vaid?s motorcade while he was returning to Baramullah after a situation review in Srinagar. The militants hurled grenades and fired from automatic weapons on his bullet-proof vehicle. The car was heavily damaged and another escort vehicle destroyed. Messages were sent immediately on wireless for reinforcements. But, by the time the troops arrived, the militants had fled. The DIG and his guards were rushed to hospital. Vaid was brought to Srinagar this morning for special treatment. Police said a bullet had nearly missed his head while another pierced his hand. The condition of two guards is reported to be critical. Vaid is also the acting police chief of the Kashmir range. The area was cordoned off by security troops and the villagers were subjected to identification parades. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. In another incident, militants last night fired on the Kangan police station and the district police lines at Ganderbal, which was recently attacked by them. No one was reported hurt. A group of militants forced their entry into a traffic police check-post at Qazigund, on the Srinagar Jammu Highway, yesterday and abducted two policemen. Two others jumped out of the window and managed to escape. The militants took the two traffic policemen to a nearby village and beat them up. The militants asked them to allow two-way traffic on the highway and not to harass drivers. They were later let off. Militants set ablaze four houses after looting the residents in Kupwara late last night. A surrendered militant Ghulam Mohammad Bhat was abducted by militants from his house last evening.
