RAMPAGE OVER LOOT ARRESTS

Calcutta, March 3 :     Over 50 CPM supporters today protested before the deputy commissioner, eastern suburban division, for an hour against police ?highhandedness? and arrest of members of a local club in Phoolbagan yesterday. Last afternoon, 13 youth, all members of a local club, were arrested for looting the house of a businessman, putting up a road blockade and ransacking the Phoolbagan police station. The youth were produced in court today and remanded in police custody till March 10. According to deputy commissioner Nazrul Islam, nine youth stormed the house of businessman Govindram Kaya on Maniktala Main Road at around 1.30 pm yesterday. Witnesses said they were all members of a local club, Dishari, and active CPM supporters. Islam said the inebriated youth demanded Rs 10,000 from Kaya, but he refused to oblige. They then forced their way inside his first floor apartment. Once in, the miscreants snatched a cellphone from Govindram?s brother and robbed gold chains and wrist watches. They also damaged three vehicles. On being informed, the local police station rushed a patrol which arrested four miscreants. As soon as news of the arrests spread, a 200-strong crowd gathered at the Maniktala Main Road to protest the police action. A police team led by deputy commissioner Sanjoy Chander then rushed to the spot and tried to convince the mob to clear the road. But they did not relent. Islam said a constable of the Sealdah traffic guard was one of those who had taken the initiative to squat on the road. In the second round of arrests, this time to clear the road, police picked up four more members of Dishari. Incensed by the action, a mob of about 50 youth then stormed the Phoolbagan police station, demanding that those arrested be released. Officers said the mob ransacked the police station, tore documents and broke glasses. Officer-in-charge Ashok Banerjee and deputy commissioner Chander, with the help of the Rapid Action Force, lathicharged the mob to disperse them. The youth fought back throwing stones at the police, leading to the arrest of five more. 10 hurt in Holi clashes At least 10 persons were injured and five arrested from different places in South 24-Parganas yesterday. Police said a clash broke out at Rabindranagar in Behala when a youth playing holi opened fire from his revolver, injuring another. Five persons were injured in the clash, one critically. At Haridevpur, two persons were injured when a group of residents clashed with another for spraying coloured water without permission. At Garia, some local youth exploded bombs and fired from country-made revolvers near a liquor shop. One person was injured. Shops in the area were closed today. No one was arrested. Two persons were injured when a clash broke out between two inebriated groups playing holi at Regent Park. Couple found dead in flat An elderly doctor and his wife were found hanging in their Southern Avenue flat yesterday. Deputy commissioner of police Narayan Ghosh said that the couple, identified as Saroj Sen and Tripti, were found hanging at their ground floor flat by residents. A suicide note left behind by the doctor said he had failed to cure his wife despite treating her personally for the last two years. Both bodies have been sent for post mortem. Police are probing the incident.
