New Delhi, Nov. 30: Rahul Gandhi's Twitter account was hacked tonight, prompting the Congress to condemn the "roguish" act that it said reflected the "disturbing insecurities" of the "prevalent fascist culture" in the country.
The account - OfficeofRG - was hacked late in the evening and several abusive messages were posted in quick succession.
It was clear that the account had been hacked as most of the posts targeted the Congress vice-president, apart from the Nehru-Gandhi family.
One post described Rahul as "Retarded Gandhi".
Another said: "We are legion. The untouchable spy force. **** with us and we unleash all your data."
The immediate provocation was clear, too, as there were references to the demonetisation controversy.
The abusive tweets were deleted immediately, but not before they had caught the attention of many. Rahul's office has complained to the cyber cell of Delhi police.
Congress communications chief Randeep Surjewala condemned the hacking in a series of tweets, calling it a conspiracy to abuse and intimidate.
"Such unscrupulous, unethical and roguish conduct of venal trolls to hack Rahul Gandhi's account reflects disturbing insecurities of prevalent fascist culture. Hacking also proves lack of digital safety around each one of us. Every digital information can be accessed, altered, morphed and modified," he said.
Surjewala said acts like these would only strengthen Rahul's resolve to raise issues that affected people. "Such tactics will never drown the sane voice of reason, nor deter Rahul Gandhi," he added.
