A youth died while attempting to make a reel after jumping into the Salanadi river in Bhadrak district on Thursday.

The deceased has been identified as Mithun Nayak of Turnunga village under Baluda panchayat in Keonjhar district, around 40km from Bhadrak.

The incident occurred around 10am when Mithun, along with his friend Sekhar Nayak, jumped into the river from Santia bridge under Bhadrak Old Bazar police station limits and was swept away.

While Sekhar managed to swim to the bank, Mithun drowned. According to police, Mithun, Sekhar and another friend had reached the bridge in the morning and decided that two of them would jump while the third would record the act on a mobile phone for reels.

Mithun and Sekhar jumped from the bridge. While Sekhar managed to swim back, Mithun’s head was suspected to have hit a stone, causing injuries and leading to his drowning.

Locals rushed to the spot and tried to locate him. Fire services personnel and police also arrived at the scene.

After a search operation of more than two-and-a-half hours, fire officials recovered the body. Police have detained the third friend who was filming the video.

The three youths worked as labourers in Bhadrak and had skipped work to shoot reels.

Anganwadi hubs

Odisha deputy chief minister Pravati Parida on Thursday virtually inaugurated 1,889 anganwadi centres across 30 districts.

Anganwadi centres play a major role in improving health and nutrition of pregnant women and children, Parida said.

Parida interacted with officials of Balasore, Ganjam, Cuttack, Angul and Deogarh and reviewed the progress of anganwadi centre buildings.
