Jinnah speeches

New Delhi, June 5 (PTI) The chief information commissioner has asked the Centre to take a view on the need to disclose two speeches made by Pakistan founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah during the pre-Independence era.

The CIC, Satyananda Mishra, asked for the reasons for withholding the speeches, which are in the archives of the All India Radio. Mishra said persons interested in knowing about India’s history would like to have access to such records.

Family death

New Delhi (PTI): A woman, 30, has allegedly drowned her daughter, 6, in a washing machine and her 11-month-old son in a bucket in east Delhi before committing suicide. The incident was discovered by her husband Devender Yadav in the afternoon.

Crash cash

New Delhi (PTI): The family of a crash victim was awarded a compensation of Rs 43 lakh by an accident claims tribunal. The tribunal directed the offending truck’s insurance firm to pay the kin of Dharambir, 39, who died in 2010 when his motorcycle collided with the negligently parked vehicle.

Fraud case

Jammu (PTI): Two Karnataka residents have been booked for allegedly cheating a man. Mohd Ashraf had alleged he got a SMS to deposit Rs 25,000 as tax and Rs 22,000 as transaction amount in accounts, held by the accused, to receive Rs 10 lakh as reward.

Pilgrim route

Dehra Dun (PTI): The 14-km Gaurikund-Kedarnath road in Rudraprayag has been divided into many sectors and an official deployed every 2km on the route to ensure a smooth journey for pilgrims visiting the Kedarnath shrine. A state minister said the division of the route to Kedarnath would help to manage the facilities for pilgrims better.

Man kills wife

Dehra Dun (PTI): An ITBP cook allegedly killed his wife by slitting her throat at a hospital in Haldwani town. C. Bubalin, who is on the run, had admitted his wife in hospital after she complained of giddiness. The couple were attending a friend’s wedding here.

Metro shooting

New Delhi, June 5 (PTI): A CISF officer today accidently shot at his junior during a drill being conducted in the Delhi Metro.

The incident occurred around 10.40am at Rohini West station. During the drill, sub-inspector Sitaram fired accidentally from his 9mm pistol, which hit constable Riptesh Tripathy in the lower abdomen. He was immediately taken to hospital and is said to be out of danger. The sub-inspector has been suspended and an inquiry has been ordered by the force.

Indian death

Kuala Lumpur (PTI): Three policemen in Malaysia were on Wednesday charged with the death of a 32-year-old ethnic Indian man in lock-up. Jaffri Jaafar, 44, Mohd Nahar Abd Rahman, 45, and Mohd Haswadi Zamri Shaari, 32 were charged in court, although no plea was recorded. The three policemen, along with another who is still at large, have been accused of colluding to cause the death of N. Dharmendran on May 21.

Jewel frauds

Coimbatore (PTI): Two city-based retail jewellers have allegedly duped a group of wholesalers of nearly Rs 15 crore. The jewellers are absconding after failing to pay for the purchase of ornaments in the last three months, police said on Wednesday.

DPS fined

New Delhi, June 5 (PTI): A city consumer forum has directed Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, to pay Rs 33,650 to a student for charging money to provide a transfer certificate though he had not sought admission nor attended any class after completing Class X from there.

DPS had demanded Rs 18,650, which was held “unjustified” by the forum. It held the school guilty of deficiency and directed it to return Rs 18,650 and award compensation of Rs 15,000 to the student.

Child workers

New Delhi (PTI): The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has pulled up the Meghalaya government for not having rescued and rehabilitated 343 child labourers working in the coal mines of the Jaintia Hills in the state.

Cash grab

Vadodara (PTI): Three armed persons snatched a bag containing Rs 10 lakh from an employee of a gas distribution company near a HDFC bank branch in Vadodara on Wednesday, police said. Manish Rana was allegedly on his way to the bank to deposit the amount when the masked trio came on a bike, fired three rounds in the air, snatched the bag and fled.

‘Maoist’ held

Balaghat (PTI): A suspected Naxalite was detained in Madhya Pradesh’s Balaghat on Wednesday, police said. A gun has been recovered from him. The 17-year-old is a resident of Chhattisgarh.

Waste study

Panaji (PTI): The Goa government is contemplating introduction of the study of garbage segregation and management as part of school curriculum, state environment minister Alina Saldanha said on Wednesday. Teachers from 129 schools have been educated on garbage management.

Cop axed

Puri (PTI): A police officer was suspended on Wednesday for allegedly assaulting three staff members of a government inspection bungalow at Puri in Odisha. R.B. Rout visited the bungalow on Tuesday night and had asked the employees to open a room for him. When they refused, he assaulted them.
