New Delhi, Sept. 17: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board has chosen "secular" Calcutta as the venue for its three-day triennial convention scheduled from November 18.
Trinamul Congress MP Sultan Ahmed, a member of the apex representative body for Muslims, said the city was selected last week considering the secular credentials of Bengal and its chief minister, Mamata Banerjee.
"All the 250 members are unanimous with the decision to hold the convention in Calcutta. Delegates from across the country, including over 100 women members, will take part in the conference and will also raise issues concerning women," Ahmed said.
At the convention, the country's most influential Islamic scholars and clerics will deliberate on issues like the triple talaq and a uniform civil code.
Zafaryab Jilani, a senior board member, said a uniform civil code would "impinge on the religious freedom and secularism principles enshrined in the Constitution".
Another member, Kamal Farooqui, said the board was planning to start awareness campaigns across the country and involve Hindus to strengthen communal harmony.
